Apple Intelligence: What you need to know about the future AI for iPhone, iPad and Mac

Earlier in June, Apple presented its future plans for artificial intelligence, called Apple Intelligence. The goal is to deliver useful and relevant information in everyday life, with personal context and a new standard for privacy. In this article, we look at the most relevant information for you as an IT manager. Most features will be launched in the fall, initially with support for American English, but let's dive in! 🤿

For the sake of simplicity, we divide the news into three main categories:

Finally: What do you as an IT manager need to consider now?

1. Active AI features

   Apple Intelligence integrates generative AI with personal context to enhance text processing, image generation, and Siri.

   
   

   Text processing

   Apple introduces AI-assisted text processing at the system level, allowing you to get help with text anywhere. This includes:

   - Spelling with academic improvements.

   - Rewriting with a choice of friendly, professional, or efficient tone.

   - Summarizing text into bullet points, spreadsheets, or lists.

   - Description of changes made in the text.

   
   

   Image generation

   Apple Intelligence also launches image generation on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You can create images based on text, keywords, or rough sketches in three styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. This allows you to replace a sketch with a generated image in notes or create unique images for email.

   
   

   Fun detail: You can search for images in the library using natural language, such as "Jonas with stickers on his face."

   
   

   Siri

   Siri receives a significant upgrade with Apple Intelligence, making it more integrated into your digital life. It becomes better at language understanding and can interpret and respond to questions more naturally. Siri helps you faster, even if you stumble over words, and remembers the context from previous requests, providing better flow.

   
   

   Background activities

   Apple Intelligence brings improvements in background activities, especially sorting and prioritizing notifications on the lock screen. This reduces unnecessary disruptions. The same applies to email, with automatic prioritization of important messages and grouping of newsletters and updates. Message threads and conversations can also be automatically summarized on the lock screen.

   
   

2. Privacy

   Apple introduces a new privacy standard for artificial intelligence with Apple Intelligence. Most AI models run locally on the device, so functionality is available without connection to external servers. For more complex tasks, Private Cloud Compute is used, combining the security of local processing with additional processing power from the cloud. Servers with Apple Silicon ensure that data is never stored or exposed, and independent experts inspect the data centers before use. This is significant for a very important aspect of using artificial intelligence.

   
   

3. Partners

   Apple integrates ChatGPT into the systems on iPhone, iPad, and Mac so that you can access ChatGPT's expertise without switching tools. Siri can now use ChatGPT when needed and always asks for permission first. For example, if you ask Siri to plan a five-course meal, Siri will ask if it should use ChatGPT to help you. If you approve, you will get a quick response (but no automatic upgrade in lacking cooking skills 👨🏼‍🍳). ChatGPT also becomes part of Apple's writing tools. IP addresses will be anonymized in queries, and the queries will not be stored.

   
   

   Apple also mentioned that they are looking to integrate more partners into this "search base" for Siri, making both broader and deeper expertise easily accessible.

What do you need to consider now?

As mentioned, this functionality is planned for launch in the fall, initially only for American English. There is little information about availability in Norwegian, but we will ensure that all our customers receive updated information as soon as it is available.

One thing to keep in mind is that all these AI features on the phone are only announced for iPhone 15 Pro. Therefore, if you are responsible for phone purchases and want to ensure this functionality, we recommend choosing iPhone 15 Pro (or waiting for new models expected to be launched in the fall). For iPad and Mac, all machines with M-chip will receive support.
